Building Maintenance & Alarm System Test

Dear Tenants,
1) On Saturday, November 4th we will be testing the fire alarm system throughout the building. Alarms will sound and elevators will re-call to the lobby throughout the day. If you plan on working on November 4th, we recommend you re-schedule to another day.
2) Due to maintenance in the main switchgear room on Saturday, November 18th, there will be no power to the main fan systems and limited elevator service.
3) On Saturday, December 9th we will be draining and cleaning the cooling tower and the House Tank on the roof. There will be no water available that day to bathrooms above the 5th floor or private kitchens.
Thank you,
TIC Management Office

The history of “History and Heritage Day” at The Interchurch Center

On February 7, 1992, members of the Worship and Special Events Panel at The Interchurch Center, discussed a request made by Native American staff that Columbus Day be renamed, “ History and Heritage Day”, going forward.
The change of the name of the holiday was voted on and approved by the Board of Trustees, and in October of that year a purification ceremony was held in the Chapel and a film festival depicting Native American cultures was shown that week.
In the years following, The Interchurch Center has celebrated the diverse cultures of building employees – with lectures, music, dance and of course food.
In 2017, we are blessed to work in a building which continues to have so much diversity. The members of our community hail from Estonia, Korea and Ecuador, Brazil, Finland and Italy. We can trace our roots to Cuba, Vietnam, Lebanon and Russia. When we call “home”, we could be calling as far away as Slovenia or as close as Trinidad.
In total, the population of The Interchurch Center currently represents over 60 countries.
The greatest assets of The Interchurch Center are people within our community who by sharing their heritage and culture with one another, enrich us all.
On Monday October 9, 2017, use that day to learn about, commemorate and celebrate the history and heritage of those around you.

President/Executive Director

Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York Declares Itself a Sanctuary Seminary

Students, Faculty, Staff, Administration and Board of Trustees Stand Together to Adopt Sanctuary Protections
NEW YORK, NY – APRIL 10, 2017—Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York continues to speak out against the Trump Administration’s xenophobic anti-immigrant policies, issuing a third official statement since the US Presidential Election of November 2016. While the two previous statements expressed condemnation and concern, today’s statement declares Union as a “Sanctuary Seminary” and charts clear measures the 181-year-old seminary is prepared to take to ensure the safety and success of its students, faculty, staff, and community members. This declaration was initiated by Union students and has been formally approved by both its Board of Trustees and faculty. It stands as a testament to Union’s longstanding commitment to inclusion and diversity and is as outlined as follows:
Union Theological Seminary has a long tradition of taking public positions on matters of pressing political importance and grave theological concern. In light of recent policies and statements issued by the Donald Trump administration threatening massive deportations, dangerous anti-immigrant policies, and travel bans targeting immigrant, refugee, and Muslim communities, we feel compelled by our religious convictions to declare Union a sanctuary seminary.
For decades, communities of faith and grassroots movements have enacted their commitment to radical hospitality through the sanctuary movement. By declaring Union a sanctuary seminary, we join this movement and stand in solidarity with those affected by the injustices of deportation, criminalization, incarceration, enforcement, and family separation. We applaud the institutions of higher education across the country

EPISCOPAL DIVINITY SCHOOL TO PURSUE AFFILIATION WITH UNION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cambridge, MA – February 24, 2017 – The Board of Trustees of the Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) today voted to pursue an affiliation with Union Theological Seminary that would create an EDS entity to provide Episcopal theological education and other programs at Union’s campus in New York.
The Board of Trustees of Union Theological Seminary has voted enthusiastically to support Union’s leadership in bringing negotiations with EDS to a successful conclusion.
“We are excited to begin negotiations toward an agreement that will allow EDS to achieve the three goals we set for ourselves when we began the process of assuring the seminary’s future,” said the Rev. Dr. Gary Hall, ’76, chair of the board. “EDS will continue to provide theological education within an accredited and degree-granting program, we will carry out our historic mission to place gospel-centered justice at the center of that education, and we will provide financial strength and stability for EDS’s future.”
“We are thrilled that EDS’s trustees have made this momentous decision and we are excited about all it portends for the future,” said the Rev. Dr. Serene Jones, president of the faculty and Johnston Family Professor for Religion and Democracy at Union. “The mission alignment between our two institutions is clear and strong. You can’t miss it! This alignment assures that the deepest commitments of both institutions will be honored and strengthened in the years ahead.”
The two seminaries will begin negotiations immediately in the hope that both boards can vote on an agreement when they meet in May, before
