Over 125 years old, The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine is the largest cathedral in the world. It is the “mother church” of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the seat of its Bishop. The church is chartered as a house of prayer for all people and as a unifying center of intellectual light and leadership.
While Cathedrals traditionally do not have their own congregations, St. John the Divine is home to the Congregation of Saint Saviour, which operates independently from the Cathedral. The congregation has approximately 400 members. Information about services and times can be found below. Furthermore, all those who would like to attend worship services and anyone seeking a place for prayer or meditation will be welcomed without charge. For sightseeing, visit the admissions page to learn more.
Like the great Medieval cathedrals and churches of the world, St. John the Divine is unfinished and will continue to be constructed over many centuries. Currently, funding is mostly directed towards maintaining the architectural integrity of the Cathedral and prioritizing serving the community through programming and social initiatives.
Some of St. John’s community initiatives include the soup kitchen (which serves roughly 25,000 meals annually), the distinguished Cathedral School (which prepares young students to be future leaders), Adults and Children in Trust (a renowned preschool, afterschool and summer program), and the outstanding Textile Conservation Lab (which preserves world treasures). The Cathedral also organizes several yearly concerts, exhibitions, performances and civic gatherings to allow for conversation, celebration, reflection and remembrance—such is the joyfully busy life of this beloved and venerated Cathedral.

The Forum is pleased to present Films at The Forum, our latest public program bringing free movie screenings to The Forum on a monthly basis. This April, in honor of Earth Day, The Forum and Columbia Climate School are partnering to present WILD LIFE, the 2023 National Geographic Documentary Film from Oscar-winning filmmakers Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The film screening will be followed by a discussion with Chai Vasarhelyi.
WILD LIFE follows conservationist Kris Tompkins on an epic, decades-spanning love story as wild as the landscapes she dedicated her life to protecting. After falling in love in mid-life, Kris and the outdoorsman and entrepreneur Doug Tompkins left behind the world of the massively successful outdoor brands they’d helped pioneer — Patagonia, The North Face, and Esprit — and turned their attention to a visionary effort to create National Parks throughout Chile and Argentina. WILD LIFE chronicles the highs and lows of their journey to effect the largest private land donation in history.

Center for Earth Ethis, UTS: Freedom to Be
Organizer
On Wednesday April 24th at 9 a.m. EDT, join the Center for Earth Ethics for “Freedom to Be: Indigenous Perspectives on How the Mainstream Development Model Affects Their Right to Freedom of Religion or Belief,” a conversation about the intersection of Indigenous issues, the concept of freedom of religion or belief, the development paradigm and the ecological crisis. This virtual discussion will feature Indigenous voices who will explore how international Indigenous communities are affected by the same extractionist industries, domination mindset and land removal policies that damage the biosphere as a whole. This conversation will also dive into the sustainable development paradigm and challenge its tendency to elevate economic development and devalue biocultural heritage and Earth-honoring ways of life.
Taily Terena of the Terena Indigenous peoples in Brazil and Yolanda Teran of the Kichwa Nation of Ecuador will join us for this panel. Roberto Múkaro Borrero, strategic advisor to CEE, will moderate. CEE Executive Director Karenna Gore will introduce and close the program.
This conversation is another in the Freedom to Be series that builds on the 2022 report on Indigenous communities by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief. This event is a virtual side event to the 2024 United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
