The Barnard community is stepping up in all sorts of ways to create space for conversations about queer identity. Congratulations to Jake Maia Arlow ’19 who recently published “Almost Flying,” a queer middle school novel that explores friendship and identity.

“I wanted to write a book that made explicit the emotions I couldn’t name in middle school. I was an anxious queer child, but I couldn’t have told you that then. This book is my joyful, roller-coaster filled answer to the questions I had about myself, and I hope it will resonate with young readers and with queer adults who never saw themselves reflected in stories like this,” explains Jake Maia Arlow ’19
