Auspex: Dance Inspired by Bird Mating Rituals

The Movement Lab’s student artist in residence Sarah Yasmine Marazzi-Sassoon and Meinzer invite you to Auspex: an interdisciplinary dance show inspired by the behavior of birds and humans, performed on Friday, December 16th at 7:00pm and Saturday, December 17th at 5:00pm and 7:00pm.

Auspex: Latin, meaning “bird watcher” or “soothsayer,” from avis, “bird,” and specere, “to look.” The Roman auspices formed many of their predictions by interpreting the behavior and flight of birds.

Join us for an evening of dance with costumes and choreography inspired by bird mating dances and behaviors. Art and science are both ways of holding a mirror up to ourselves. This piece is an exploration into how and why we, as a species, tell stories and how our relatives in the animal kingdom can tell us about ourselves.

The Glicker Milstein Theatre is located in the basement of the Diana Center at Barnard College.

100% of ticket revenue will be donated to “Save Brazil,” the Brazilian branch of Bird Life International. They aim to protect bird species in the Amazon from extinction and fund research.

This show was created in part in the Movement Lab and under the guidance of Guy de Lancey.
