Question Authority! Pursuing New Models for Classical Auditory Phenomena
Most fields in science have accumulated ‘classical’ models for fundamental phenomena, and sometimes these models persist despite strong evidence against them. I’ll present an example of our efforts to challenge the ‘Critical-Band Model,’ which has been a favorite model in hearing science for many decades, applied to numerous phenomena in hearing. My goal is to inspire the audience, especially students, to continue questioning the classical models and literature – though it’s not always an easy road, it’s exciting to explore new ideas and try to push the field forward. Specific examples will include the neural underpinnings that can explain detection of sounds in noise, and novel models for pitch perception.

Laurel H. Carney, Ph.D.,
Marylou Ingram Professor of Biomedical Engineering; Professor, Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Electrical & Computer Engineering, University of Rochester
Laurel Carney’s academic background is in Electrical Engineering (SB, MIT ’83; MS & PhD, University of Wisconsin, ’85, ’89). After a post-doc in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, she settled into Biomedical Engineering, moving from Boston University (’89-’00), to Syracuse University (’00-’07), to the University of Rochester (’07-present). Her work focuses on the neuroscience of hearing, combining physiology in the central nervous system, behavioral and psychophysical testing, and computational modeling. Key questions include hearing in noisy environments, speech coding, and novel models for pitch.
