The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and other groups have concluded that we will not be able to keep greenhouse warming below 2°C without large-scale removal of CO2 from the air. Building on observations of natural alteration and weathering, in which CO2 from the air reacts with rocks to form solid carbonate minerals, a group at Lamont aims to emulate these spontaneous, natural processes in accelerated, engineered systems that remove CO2 from the air and store it permanently in solid carbonate minerals underground.
