Elizabeth Keckley (1818-1907) was born a slave in Virginia. Her exceptional sewing, designing, and dressmaking talents earned her both freedom and fame as the premier fashion designer for 19th century governmental wives; even in the midst of the Civil War. As exclusive dressmaker for Mary Todd Lincoln, we enter the hearts and minds of the President and Mrs. Lincoln. Based upon “Lizzie” Keckley’s 1868 narrative Behind The Scenes Thirty Years a Slave, Or Four Years in the White House.
Direction and set design Ray Achan/ Heather Lanza
Tami Tyree’s portrayal features special guests Laura Bowman and Andrew Horton reading actual letters from the National Archives from a soldier and mother of United States Colored Troops. Hang onto your seat as we follow along in “Lizzie’s” storied journey from South to North, and everywhere in between. From house slave to the upper crust of society, hers was a treacherous path of beauty, triumph, and tragedy. With guest soloist Ras Chemash Lamed.
ALL SEATS $40.00 (plus service charge) with code DRESSY1 until Sept. 30
