Ernest Cole: Lost and Found
Screening and Director Q&A

Join us at The Riverside Church for a special screening of the documentary ERNEST COLE: LOST AND FOUND, presented in collaboration with Magnolia Pictures. Following the film, there will be a Q&A session with the director, Raoul Peck, moderated by Rev. Mira Sawlani-Joyner, Minister of Justice, Change, & Advocacy.

About The Film:

Oscar-nominated filmmaker Raoul Peck’s ERNEST COLE: LOST AND FOUND explores the life and legacy of Ernest Cole, one of South Africa’s first Black freelance photographers. His early work, which exposed the realities of Black life under apartheid, shocked audiences when first published. Fleeing South Africa in 1966, Cole lived in exile in the U.S., where he captured the contrasting cultures of America and his homeland, often revealing eerie similarities. During this time, he published his landmark book House of Bondage, a powerful denunciation of apartheid that, despite being banned in South Africa, solidified his status as a pivotal photographer at just 27 years old. After his death, over 60,000 of his 35mm negatives were discovered in a bank vault in Stockholm, Sweden—many believed to be lost forever, including countless images taken in the U.S. This film serves as a reintroduction of this important Black artist to a new generation, told through his writings, the memories of those close to him, and the lens of his uncompromising work.
