Fashionspeak Fridays: Africa’s Fashion Diaspora

Join Elizabeth Way, Associate Curator of Costume at The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology for an exclusive overview of the museum’s current exhibition: Africa’s Fashion Diaspora, which explores fashion’s role in shaping international Black diasporic cultures. Sixty ensembles and accessories by Black designers from Africa, Europe, North and South America, and the Caribbean are placed in dialogue with each other, showcasing how these designers take complex inspirations from their own Black cultures and others across the diaspora. Elizabeth Way’s exhibitions include: Fresh, Fly, and Fabulous: Fifty Years of Hip Hop Style (2023) and Food & Fashion (2023). Way guest-curated Ann Lowe: American Couturier at Winterthur Museum Garden & Library (2023) and has published articles in the journal Fashion Theory and contributed chapters to several scholarly books and publications. Way edited the books Black Designers in American Fashion (2021) and Ann Lowe: American Couturier (2023). Books will be available for purchase. Black fashion is highly encouraged!
