Film Screening & Discussion. Ivan and Marta

Please join the Ukrainian Film Club for a screening of Ivan and Marta (2023), director Serhii BukovskyYuri Shevchuk will introduce the film and mediate the post-screening Q&A.

This is the latest film by the internationally celebrated director Serhii Bukovsky. It is based on a love story of Ivan Dziuba and his wife Marta who lived together for more than fifty years. Ivan Dziuba, a prominent representative of the Sixtiers, the Soviet dissident movement that included such Ukrainian intellectuals as the writers Lina Kostenko, Ivan Drach, Vasyl Symonenko, Vasyl Holoborodko, Mykola Vinhranovsky, the literary scholars Ivan Svitlychny, Yevhen Sverstiuk, the political activists Levko Lukianenko, Viacheslav Chornovil, Mykhailo Horyn, Bohdan Horyn, Nadiia Svitlychna, the film directors Sarkis Paradzhanian, Yuri Illienko, and many others. Their work marked the 1960s as Ukraine’s Second Revival. Many of them ended up in the Gulag. Ivan Dziuba’s book Internationalism or Russification exposed the Soviet Union as a colonial empire bent on destruction of non-Russian cultures through their forced assimilation. It became the manifesto of Ukrainian resistance and was immediately banned as subversive. Without exaggeration, Ivan Dziuba is one of Ukraine’s most important cultural figures of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
