The Ukrainian Film Club of Columbia University will screen and discuss the feature documentary Ukraine, Overcoming the Darkness (2022) by directors Dmytro Burko, Andrii Lytvynenko, Ruslan Batytsky et al.
Directed by a group of independent filmmakers that includes: Dmytro Burko, Elena Kramdada, Lola Tashkenbaieva, Adnrii Lytvynenko, Tetiana Buialo, Oleksii Radynsky, Ruslan Batytsky, Tetiana Stoliarova, Maria Shevchenko, Yegor Troyanovsky, Taras Spivak, and Alex Sheiko, this feature documentary is a kaleidoscope of stories about Ukrainians heroically defending themselves against the brutal Russian aggression. It is compiled of shorts about Ukrainian cities, towns, and villages such as Kyiv, Mykolaiv, Kharkiv, Bucha, Irpin and others, whose civilian population is faced with savagery and wanton cruelty of the invading Russian armies. The events depicted recreate the topography of the first three months of the invasion and the genocide that is, once again, being perpetrated in Europe. These eyewitness accounts showcase the incredible solidarity, perseverance, love for freedom, and faith that make Ukrainians invincible. To quote from the film synopsis, “Behind each Ukrainian soldier there is a robust home front and light, while the enemies have immense darkness of their souls.” Yuri Shevchuk will introduce the program and lead the post-screening discussion.
