In Conversation: Angela Su and Betti-Sue Hertz

Join artist Angela Su for a conversation about what attracts her to wide-ranging source materials from a 16th century Albrecht Durër print to medical drawings to the 1960s and 1970s American counterculture movements that inform her docufiction videos and intimate drawings. She will discuss the energizing impact of using fragments of cinematic and scientific archives to build her critical and speculative, even darkly utopic works comprising the exhibition Angela Su: Melencolia.

Angela Su has a degree in biochemistry from the University of Toronto and a degree in visual arts from the Ontario College of Art and Design. She presented Arise, Hong Kong in Venice in the Hong Kong pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale and Lauren O—The Greatest Levitator in the Polyhedric Cosmos of Time at M+ in Hong Kong in 2023. The video and performance Contagious Cities: Far Away, Too Close was commissioned by Wellcome and exhibited at Tai Kwun, Hong Kong (2019). Group exhibitions include the 17th Biennale of Sydney (Sydney, 2010); 2nd CAFAM Biennale (Beijing, 2014); Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Vienna, 2017); Frieze London (London, 2019); Whitechapel Gallery (London, 2019); The Drawing Center (New York City, 2020); Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (Mexico City, 2020); Ullens Center for Contemporary Art (Beijing, 2020); and Levyhalli (Suomenlinna, Helsinki, 2021). She published an art novel Berty (2013) and a science fiction anthology Dark Fluid (2017), in which she uses science fiction as a tool for social justice.

Betti-Sue Hertz is the Director and Chief Curator of the Wallach Art Gallery. Angela Su: Melencolia is her most recent exhibition.

This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition, Angela Su: Melencolia, on view at the Wallach Art Gallery February 2 through March 10, 2024.
