The film Bearden Plays Bearden was made 40 years ago and is still the most comprehensive documentary on artist Romare Bearden. Nelson Breen received an Emmy award for directing the film in 1980.
Stanley Nelson is today’s leading documentarian of the African-American experience. He directed Season 8 of the popular PBS series ART 21:Chicago (2019) on artists Nick Cave, Theaster Gates, Barbara Kasten, and Chris Ware. Nelson’s film, Attica has been nominated for an Oscar Award this year.
