Narratives of Violence and Transformation – Venezuelan Photobooks

Please join us on April 20th at 7PM for a conversation in English/Spanglish with Oscar B. CastilloCarlos P. Beltran, and Faride Mereb about two photobooks published in 2022: Beltran’s Se me ocurrió de repente and Castillo’s Esos que saben (one of TIME’s photobooks of the year and shortlisted for the Aperture/Paris Photo Photobook Award 2022).

Oscar B. Castillo’s Esos que saben is the result of several stays in a Venezuelan prison controlled by inmates, and it explores the experience of incarceration, transformation, and reinsertion of the Free Convict hip-hop collective. Se me ocurrió de repente, designed by Faride Mereb, is the product of a 12 year-long collaboration between Carlos P. Beltran and poet Yadira Silva, whose experience of incarceration in Venezuela catalyzed an extensive body of literary work.
