NECR Webinar: Negotiating a Foreign Fintech Unicorn in A New Market

Dr. Jonathan Chang (NECR 2011) will discuss how he applies the practical skills of negotiation and conflict resolution in business (contracts, vendor agreement, internal corporate dispute, among others). Jonathan leverages the knowledge gained from NECR on a daily basis and will share how he uses his skills to navigate the complexity of scaling a foreign unicorn fintech company in a market like Indonesia, where conflicts can arise from cultural misunderstanding and miscommunication.

Bio: Dr. Chang is the CEO of Fintopia Indonesia, the largest micro lending digital platform in Indonesia, having channeled more than $1.6 billion USD in unsecured loans to millions of borrowers (mostly unbanked and underbanked). This unicorn fintech firm employs close to 500 people with 60% women and implements an inclusive and fun workplace environment. Previously, Dr Chang was the Regional Head of Government Partnerships and Engagement at Shopify and the Country Head of Google for Education Next Billion Users (NBU) initiative in Indonesia. Prior to Google, Dr Chang served as senior advisor of higher education to Indonesia’s Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. In addition, he was the Executive Directors of the Entrepreneurship Centre and the Overseas Colleges at National University of Singapore, and the Lien Centre for Social Innovation at Singapore Management University. Deep rooted in entrepreneurship, Dr Chang has co-founded and advised several start-ups across sectors in US and Southeast Asia, funded by Y-Combinator, 500 Startups, and other global investors. Dr Chang received the coveted European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD) Case Writing Award for documenting an innovative social enterprise in Bali. His TEDx talk at Harvard about the importance of a mission-driven life has attained global viewership. Dr Chang is a graduate of UC Berkeley, Columbia, Stanford Business School, and Harvard Kennedy School, and earned his doctorate degree from UPenn. For fun, Dr Chang finds solace and inspiration from mountaineering, having trekked to Mt. Everest Base Camp and summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Kala Patthar, Mt. Nagarjuna, and Mt. Kinabalu.
