Sciences of Learning and the Conditions of Educational Equity

Throughout the year, we have learned about different research, approaches and education in various science disciplines. The CEP and Office for DEI now invite Barnard to think about the science of learning. How can understanding the science of learning help us identify the necessary conditions for achieving educational and social equity and take steps toward changing those conditions?

Please join the Office for DEI and the CEP in a Year of Science round table discussion about how science informs theories and practices of learning with Jalisha Jenifer, Postdoctoral Fellow and Adjunct Assistant Professor in Psychology, Na’ilah Suad Nasir,  President of the Spencer Foundation and Megan Bang, Professor in the Learning Sciences and Human Development, Northwestern University.

Drs. Nasir and Bang will discuss the science of learning, an emergent and interdisciplinary body of scholarship that brings research in neuroscientific, biological, and evolutionary systems into contact with humanistic and social scientific inquiries into educational equity and social justice. This interdisciplinary approach to learning is significant for its ability to meld empirical and critical modes of thinking within a perspective that asks not simply what students learn but how learning happens. Embedded within this perspective is a unique understanding of and approach to addressing the role that educational institutions and teacher training have played (and continue to play) in reproducing hierarchies of race, gender, ability, citizenship, and socioeconomic status.
