Scribbling and Doodling from Leonardo da Vinci to Cy Twombly

The exhibition “Gribouillage. De Léonard de Vinci à Cy Twombly”, currently on view at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, explores the practice of scribbling and doodling in the history of artistic creation, through a selection of almost 150 works, including drawings, paintings, portions of walls, copper plates, manuscripts, photos and films. The timeless, uncategorizable dimension of these playful, regressive, explorative or subversive graphic gestures is activated through a dialogue between Renaissance drawings and works of modern artists, as well as with a series of anthropological objects.

Diane Bodart, co-curator of the exhibition, and Maria Stavrinaki, one of the authors of the catalog, will present some of the works on show at the exhibit, and will discuss the productive challenges that scribbles and doodles offer to the field of art history.
