The Science of Well-Being

We hope you will join us for a series of discussions that explore the interconnection between science, health, and wellness, inspired by the Barnard Year of Science and the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being, Barnard’s centralized hub for all wellness-related initiatives across campus.

The Science of Pain

Monday, March 28
6:00–7:00 p.m. (EDT)

Dr. Rachel Zoffness, a notable health and pain psychologist, and Mary C. Commerford, PhD, director of Barnard’s Rosemary Furman Counseling Center, will speak to the cognitive, emotional, and environmental issues related to chronic pain and the connection between mindfulness and pain management. Dr. Zoffness is a visiting professor at Stanford, an assistant clinical professor at the UCSF School of Medicine, and a Mayday Fellow.

A Heartfelt Conversation about a Career in Cardiology with Barnard Alumnae Cardiologists

Tuesday, March 29
6:00–7:00 p.m. (EDT)

Barnard has a strong tradition of preparing its students to pursue medicine. Join a panel of Barnard’s alumnae cardiologists in a lively discussion about their careers in medicine, and in particular cardiology, the challenges and opportunities, and how the sector has changed personally, socially, and professionally. Featuring:

Dr. Merle Myerson ’78
Cardiologist and Lipidologist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Heart and Vascular Center

Dr. Lauren B. Cooper ’03
Director of Heart Failure, North Shore University Hospital, and Associate Professor in the Department of Cardiology at Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell

Nora Fox Goldschlager ’61, MD
Professor Emeritus, University of California San Francisco School of Medicine

Annabelle Santos Volgman ’80, MD
Professor of Medicine and Senior Attending Physician at Rush Medical College and Rush University Medical Center and Medical Director of the Rush Heart Center for Women

Understanding Your Fertility

Wednesday, March 30
6:00–7:00 p.m. (EDT)

General awareness and education surrounding fertility and women’s health are lacking, despite their presence in most public school curricula. Fertility specialist Dr. Kolbe Hancock ’08, in conversation with Marina Catallozzi, MD, MSCE, Barnard’s vice president of health and wellness and chief health officer, will discuss the importance of understanding one’s fertility and how it impacts physical, mental, and financial health through one’s life course.

Architecture and Comprehensive Well-Being

Thursday, March 31
6:00–7:00 p.m. (EDT)

A panel of experts explores the impact that the design and content of our buildings and spaces can have on our physical, mental, and financial well-being. Featuring:

Carol Loewenson ’76, FAIA, LEED AP
Lead Architect for the Francine A. LeFrak Foundation Center for Well-Being

Irina Verona
Adjunct Assistant Professor in Architecture at Barnard College and Expert in Designing for Neurodiversity

Sandra Goldmark
Associate Professor of Professional Practice in Theatre at Barnard College and Director of Campus Sustainability and Climate Action
