The Spiritual Life of Social Movements

Lecture by nyle fort
Chaired by Eugenia Lean

This talk is an invitation to think together about the spiritual dimensions of current social movements. Mainstream conceptions of political activism tend to emphasize improving material conditions. Of course, this is foundational to any liberation project. Missing from these accounts, however, is a serious attention to and appreciation for the spiritual forces that animate quests to transform society. From climate activism and the modern abolition movement to labor organizing and global solidarity struggles, some activists are yearning to transform hearts and minds as much as public policies and political agendas. There seems to be a growing awareness that, to riff on Detroit organizer Grace Lee Boggs: to remake the world we must transform ourselves and to transform ourselves we must remake the world.
