Tuya siempre, Julita

Barrio Independent Productions proudly presents the grand premiere of the new version of “Tuya Siempre, Julita,” a captivating play by the esteemed Puerto Rican playwright Dr. Roberto-Ramos Perea. Set to be staged at the Miriam Colón Theater at the Julia de Burgos Cultural Center, this revival promises to illuminate the profound and tumultuous relationship between Julia de Burgos and Luis Llorens Torres, two titans of Puerto Rican literature. Much has been said about Julia de Burgos, her poignant poetry, and her tragic life. Yet, the story continues to surprise us with new discoveries about her loves and her relentless struggle to become, and remain, the most significant Puerto Rican national poet in our history.

Originally published in 1993, “Tuya Siempre, Julita” stunned scholars by depicting the romantic entanglement between de Burgos and Llorens Torres. Initially dismissed as mere gossip, rigorous research later validated this relationship, revealing how deeply their works influenced one another, almost to the point of mutual plagiarism. “There are mysterious arrows from both sides that, when closely examined, reveal a passion overshadowed by a sad and desolate attitude towards life, a dramatic age difference, and possible, perhaps probable, envy between colleagues. This envy, upon closer inspection, may have stemmed from deep mutual admiration and respect, evident in their intimate papers. This, in turn, must have been sabotaged by carnal desire, weariness, and guilt,” says Roberto-Ramos Perea.

Under the co-direction of Amneris Morales and Iván Goris, this revival features a stellar cast: Belange Rodríguez as Julia de Burgos, José Cheo Oliveras as Luis Llorens Torres, and Caridad del Valle as La Gringa, a mysterious character representing the darker aspects of both poets. This premiere will take place on June 13, 14, 15, and 16 at the Julia de Burgos Cultural Center (1680 Lexington Ave. New York, NY 10029) at 8p.m. and Sunday at 4pm.
