David Briggs improvising on a hymn tune, “Down Ampney,” by Ralph Vaughan Williams

In preparation for his upcoming Great Music in a Great Space virtual concert, which will be all works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Artist in Residence David Briggs improvises on the hymn tune “Down Ampney,” by Ralph Vaughan Williams.

David says, “What particularly strikes me about RVW his that he was so much more than a wealthy English ‘pastoral’ composer, which is perhaps his general caricature. Today’s improv is in homage to this fantastic figure in British music, based on his wonderful hymn tune “Down Ampney” and also with references to the Fifth Symphony, which is understandable in my head at the moment. I hope you will enjoy the crescendo!”
