Happy Pride Month! Throughout the month, we’ll be sharing quotes from the American Poets Corner which speak to the spirit of Pride and the Cathedral’s mission towards equality for all.
Emily Dickinson, inducted into the American Poets Corner in 1984, spent two decades writing deeply heartfelt letters to and infatuated poems about her sister-in-law, Susan Gilbert. The two women took long strolls through nature together, exchanged books, read poetry to each other, and corresponded intimately for many years. Susan became Dickinson’s muse, mentor, editor, and her most intense lifelong attachment.
