13/13 Seminar Series: 12/13 | Open Borders
April 15, 6:15 pm - 7:30 pm
Professors Seyla Benhabib, Joseph Carens, Paulina Ochoa Espejo, and Bernard E. Harcourt read and discuss “The End of the 1951 Refugee Convention?” by Seyla Benhabib, The Ethics of Immigration (Chapter 11) by Joseph Carens, On Borders by Paulina Ochoa Espejo, and Border & Rule by Harsha Walia.
To prepare for the seminar, please read “Border Regimes in the Age of Covid” by Seyla Benhabib, “Politics, Principles, and Open Borders” by Joseph Carens, “Abolish ICE!” by Paulina Ochoa Espejo, and “Introduction to 12/13 on Borders” by Bernard E. Harcourt, as well as posts from graduate students in the class, including “Open Borders, Then Abolish Them” by Anita Yandle, “The Case for Open Borders” by Cletus Alengah, and “The Specter of Sovereignty” by Hedwig Lieback.
This event was originally scheduled for April 1, but due to the graduate student strike, we have now rescheduled it for April 15. The strike has now been paused due to the introduction of a third-party mediator, but the negotiations between the union and the university have not fully concluded. In the meantime, please consider supporting the union’s solidarity fund.
