ABOUT THE SEMINAR
Objective: Design, build, characterize and test a laparoscopic induction heating instrument. The heating capabilities of the instrument were evaluated on suspensions of iron oxide nanoparticles and on a metallic sample. Methods: A 20-turn miniature magnetic field generator (⌀outer=11 mm) was built and placed at the distal end of a 34-cm long polycarbonate tube (⌀outer=15.9 mm). A custom, water-based cooling system was used to remove heat dissipated due to resistive losses at the coil. Iron oxide nanoparticles at different concentrations, and synthesized by an optimized co-precipitation method, were exposed to an alternating magnetic field (AMF) of 17 kA/m at 290 kHz. Additionally, a metallic disk was placed in different media (air, water, gelatin), at different axial distances from the instrument, and exposed to magnetic field intensities that ranged from 2 to 9 kA/m at 290 kHz. Results: Nanoparticles reached a maximum temperature of 96°C at a concentration of 100 mg/mL and a magnetic field intensity of 17 kA/m. The metallic disk reached temperatures as high as 430°C in air. Conclusion: The laparoscopic instrument can generate magnetic fields that are strong enough (17 kA/m) for induction heating applications within the human body. Significance: In the realm of magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH), this laparoscopic instrument design has the potential to treat intraperitoneal tumors after debulking procedures.

Dr. Eduardo J. Juan is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Puerto Rico – Mayagüez (UPRM). He is also the founding Executive Director of the Graduate Program in Bioengineering at UPRM. Dr. Juan has experience in biomedical acoustics, medical instrumentation, entrepreneurship (co-founder and board member of SonarMed Inc.), and in training undergraduate and graduate students in biomedical engineering research and development. Over the last 19 years, Dr. Juan has supervised the research work of 14 graduate students, over 30 undergraduate students, and 2 high school teachers. Dr. Juan has authored or co-authored 5 peer-reviewed journal articles, 7 conference proceedings, and 3 utility patents. He has also presented his research work in national and international scientific conferences, as well as having been PI or Co-PI in grants totaling approximately $10M.
