Body and Soul: Sex and Spirituality in Diverse Religious Communities
June 14, 5:30 pm - June 16, 8:00 pm
For people of faith in all communities, sexual relationships and experiences are shaped, for both better and worse, by religious values and beliefs. In order to support the sexual health and emotional wellbeing of all New Yorkers, social service, mental health, and spiritual care professionals need to know what diverse religious traditions have to say about sex.
The June 15 conference will explore these issues in conversation with scholars, religious leaders, sex therapists, and sexual health educators. And on June 14 and 16, we will focus specifically on the spiritual lives and struggles of LGBTQ Muslims and Orthodox Jews, by screening the award-winning documentaries A Jihad for Love and Trembling Before G-d, followed by commentary from a clinical social worker and conversations with the filmmakers.
