When Thoughts Become Actions: Using Neuroimaging to Detect Conscious Awareness after Serious Brain Injury
FREE and Open to All
Dr Adrian Owen is Professor at The Brain and Mind Institute, Western University, Canada and the former Canada Excellence Research Chair in Cognitive Neuroscience and Imaging. Combining neuroimaging (MRI and EEG) with cognitive studies in brain-injured patients and healthy participants, Owen studies memory, perception and reasoning in patients who have sustained brain injuries that result in disorders of consciousness, as well as patients with neurodegenerative diseases. This work has changed what we understand about the nature of consciousness, and has even demonstrated conscious perception and processing of language in some patients in persistent vegetative and other minimally conscious states.
From “Into the Gray Zone”: Through incredible new scanning technology, we connect with these brains, visualizing their function and mapping their inner universe. In return, they reveal to use how we think and feel, the scaffolding of our consciousness, and the architecture of our sense of self – they illuminate the essence of what it means to be alive and human.
