From Climate to Health: Multidisciplinary Approaches to Bridging Decisions across Scales
A conversation between:
Vimla L. Patel, Department of Biomedical Informatics
Adam Sobel, Departments of Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics and of Earth and Environmental Sciences
With opening remarks by:
Alex Halliday, Director of the Earth Institute
Jeannette Wing, Avanessians Director of the Data Science Institute
Rui Costa, Director/CEO of the Zuckerman Institute
This conversation is part of an inter-Institute initiative among Columbia’s Data Science Institute, Earth Institute, and Zuckerman Institute to advance the science of data-driven decision making in the context of climate change. The initiative builds on research about decision making, which has been rapidly advancing in multiple disciplines including neuroscience, psychology, economics, climate science and data science. Yet each discipline examines decisions in very different contexts and scales, leaving wide gaps in the research focus, methods, and applications, and moreover limiting communication across disciplines. The goal of this initiative is to bridge these gaps and facilitate the interdisciplinary integration of knowledge to foster new insights, applications and interventions in decisions that affect individuals, communities, and policymakers. This event builds on meetings of the three Institutes for the past year and looks forward to furthering activities over the next two years.
We invite the participation of faculty and researchers with relevant expertise from across Columbia University. We invite faculty and researchers of all ranks, as well as students and other trainees, to participate in this event and express interest in future activities with the goal of developing shared vocabulary, formulating research questions and developing new projects in this interdisciplinary research space.
For those who cannot attend this event, but who would like to learn more about this initiative going forward, please fill out this form to join our email list.
