Purim Eve Off Broadway

February 25, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

A VIRTUAL PURIM FOR GROWN-UPS

Put on a costume, grab your grogger, and be prepared to laugh, make some noise, and sing along! Our annual, sold-out Purim on Broadway will stream nationwide for the first time.

Livestream
Thursday, February 25
6:30-8:30 p.m.

Our annual Purim Eve on Broadway has moved online, but it will be the same, side-splitting, “grown-up” celebration. In addition to Ma’ariv and a full Megillah reading, there will be a multi-media, musical shpiel integrated throughout. Featuring satirical songs set to familiar Broadway tunes, the spiel is a witty, edgy commentary on Megillat Esther exploring faith and doubt, good and evil, courage and cowardice, feminism, anti-Semitism, and the way ancient questions and challenges continue to resonate in our lives today.

Most of the liturgy, the text of the Megillah, and all song lyrics will be presented on-screen. We’ll also provide a pdf for you to print out in advance. We will be using a new translation of Megillat Esther. Watch an interview with the translator below.

Purim Off Broadway will stream at jtsa.edu/live.

WATCH: A NEW TRANSLATION OF MEGILLAT ESTHER

Get the inside scoop on the brand new translation of the Book of Esther that we’ll be using this year with the gracious permission of the Rabbinical Assembly. Watch an interview with Bible scholar Dr. Pamela Barmash, who just completed the new translation to be published by the Rabbinic Assembly in 2022.

WHO’S WHO

Our annual Purimshpiel is written and produced by Rabbi Jan Uhrbach, director of the Block/Kolker Center for Spiritual Arts, and it JTS cantorial and rabbinical students. The Megillah will be read by students, alumni, and faculty of JTS.

The event is sponsored by the Block/Kolker Center for Spiritual Arts. Purim on Broadway is an annual, sold-out event at JTS, now available for the first time nationwide via livestream.

SUGGESTIONS FOR PARTICIPATING

We encourage synagogues, communities, and groups of friends to participate together via your own “watch parties.” We recommended having a physical copy of the evening service and Megillat Esther; a pdf will be available to print out in advance. In addition, your experience will be enhanced by streaming on a large screen, with good quality speakers or headphones.
