Reimagining Learning & Research in a Global Crisis: An Avery & GSAPP Open Forum
In the past year, Columbia has reinvented itself in order to guarantee scholarly continuity to its communities as safely as possible. This has rendered many of its schools, centers, and libraries deeply limited in accommodating how scholars work and what they can access. GSAPP has had to reconsider the role of the studio or fabrication lab in a virtual learning environment. Avery has had to turn away numerous audiences reliant on its archives, rare materials, and research collections. Conversely, Columbia’s communities are at an equal disadvantage as many public archives and research collections are closed to them. This has necessitated new approaches to design, research, and documentary methodologies that have been further challenged by a greater understanding of bias and exclusion.
This open forum brings together Hannah Bennett, Director of the Avery Architectural and Fine Arts Library, Dean Amale Andraos of GSAPP, Caitlyn Campbell MSCCCP, Assistant Professor Ateya Khorakiwala, and Charlette Caldwell, PhD, to discuss this new landscape of learning and research and the impact it will have on the scholarly record for architectural history and design. The panel will address questions such as what goals or ambitions, developed prior to the pandemic, have been reinforced by the pandemic? What has the pandemic prevented and how will that change assumptions about libraries and approaches to research and practice? During the pandemic, we also witnessed the epic impact of BLM forcing an interrogation of equity and representation among library collections, spaces, and services as well as in curricula, programming, and research practices. The panel will reflect on how these developments, beyond the pandemic, provide an opportunity to contribute to a more inclusive and interdisciplinary research landscape.
