What To The Slave Is The Fourth of July?

On July 5, 1852, Frederick Douglass gave a keynote address at an Independence Day celebration and asked, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”

Members and Staff of The Riverside Church put together a video montage reading a few excerpts that were particularly relevant to today, in Frederick Douglass’ exact words, and used previous examples from readings by both James Earl and Danny Glover.

Lift Every Voice and Vote

Riverside Church, in partnership with JusticeAid, a charitable nonprofit, presents LIFT EVERY VOICE AND VOTE, a public forum on voting and voter suppression. Click here for forum program: https://justiceaid.org/voices-forum-program/

Voting is a powerful form of protest! Why are certain citizens denied the right to vote? Why do others choose not to vote? What can we do NOW so people don’t have to choose between their health and their Constitutional right to vote during COVID-19?
