Manhattan School of Music Opera Theater presents Tobias Picker’s “Emmeline”

This performance of “Emmeline” took place on April 28, 2019 in Neidorff-Karpati Hall at Manhattan School of Music.

A stirring and thought-provoking contemporary tale based on the Greek myth of Oedipus, of a woman from Maine who is ostracized in her hometown after a shocking, long-held secret becomes public.

The MSM production is the first time the full opera has been updated by composer Tobias Picker (MM ’76), along with director Thaddeus Strassberger — it is now set in 1999 and 2019, from the original version in the 1840s and 1860s, which premiered in 1996 by the Santa Fe Opera.

Both the 1996 premiere of “Emmeline”, and this newly updated version, are conducted by George Manahan (BM ’73, MM ’76), MSM’s Director of Orchestral Activities.
