This Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month we will be celebrating a cross-section of Union’s AAPI alums. Today we honor, Sri Lankan theologian Lynn de Silva, who earned his Masters in Sacred Theology from Union in the 1950s! A pioneer in Buddhist-Christian dialogue, de Silva’s book titled “Buddhism: Beliefs and Practices in Sri Lanka” was considered unparalleled as an introduction to Buddhism in Sri Lanka. One of his other notable contributions to theology is “The Problem of the Self in Buddhism and Christianity”, in which de Silva points to a misconception held by Buddhists and Christians that the notion of an immortal soul is a biblical teaching. He was also the Chief Translator for the Old Testament into the Sinhalese Bible and Director of the Ecumenical Institute for Study and Dialogue.
