This Summer, Opera Grapples With Race

Artistic Advisory Board Member and Oscar-nominated composer Terence Blanchard (HonDMA ’17) will premiere his new opera, “Fire Shut Up in My Bones”, at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis this weekend.

Voice alumna Briana Elyse Hunter (MM ’12) will perform the role of The Mother in the world premiere of “Blue” at The Glimmerglass Festival beginning next month.

Read an interview with Mr. Blanchard about his new work and hear Ms. Hunter perform an excerpt from “Blue” in this article from The New York Times. “The Central Park Five” is now an opera. Other new works explore the Black Lives Matter era, identity and more issues long ignored by the art form.
