The West Harlem Group Assistance, Inc. (WHGA) is a community based development corporation established in 1971 to revitalize the under- invested West and Central Harlem communities riddled with dilapidated and abandoned buildings. WHGA’s core efforts include affordable housing development and preservation as well as asset building initiatives such as homeownership and small business development. To date, WHGA has developed over $110 million in low to moderate income housing totaling 1,640 units, 900 of which are self-managed by the organization and 116 of which function as transitional housing units (the West Harlem Residence’s 45 units and Convent Avenue Family Living Centers’ 71 units).

The Convent Avenue Family Living Center (CAFLC)

CAFLC is a transitional housing facility for homeless families sponsored by the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD).  CAFLC receives families displaced by fires, natural disasters or city-based vacate orders. These families are referred through the Central Intake Office at the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development via the Client and Housing Services Department. CAFLC is prohibited from accepting families that have not been referred through this agency.
