Today is Juneteenth. Today is a very important day.
Also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day, Juneteenth celebrates the emancipation of the remaining enslaved African American people in the Confederacy. On this day, we commemorate June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger read federal orders in Galveston, Texas, which stated that all previously enslaved people in Texas were free. Despite the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation and the conclusion of the Civil War, word had yet to reach the deepest parts of the former Confederacy in Galveston, Texas.
Today, Mount Sinai Morningside celebrates Juneteenth as an official federal holiday and celebrate in recognition of its importance to our community. Through our observance, we acknowledge the journey of African Americans from enslavement to freedom and the pride, resilience, and determination that was part of that journey. We celebrate our African American heroes and heroines and their contributions to our society and culture. Juneteenth reminds us that, although much has changed over 155 years, we still have a way to go.
We hope you will join us, wherever you are, in the education, celebration, and action this holiday encourages.
