Newark Charter School Extends Bank Street’s Reach

On February 5, the Newark Educators’ Community Charter School (NECCS) hosted an event to celebrate the newest additions to their leadership team, Bank Street alumnae Dina Velez ’05, Principal, and Davia Franklyn ’97, Director of Teaching and Learning.
Bank Street’s partnership with NECCS extends and strengthens the College’s commitment to improving urban education in Newark. This alliance spans two decades and is rooted in Project New Beginnings, a collaboration between the College and Newark Public Schools that was originally designed to restructure kindergarten classrooms and expanded over time to include higher grade levels and professional development for teachers and school leaders. New Beginnings also developed school-community-family partnerships to support a holistic approach to ensuring student success.
Bank Street alumni, faculty, friends, and the NECCS faculty, founders, and Board of Trustees gathered to enjoy a reception, watch a video of “A Day in the Life of NECCS,” and join in a dance demonstration by 5th grade students well-rehearsed in foxtrot, rumba, and swing. Bank Street Associate Dean and NECCS Trustee Farhad Asghar and NECCS faculty members Gabriela Mastrangelo and Tiere Jenuine led tours of the school building.
The evening concluded with remarks by NECCS Board Chair and Bank Street faculty member Lynne Einbender, who officially welcomed Dina and Davia to the leadership team and talked about her long professional relationship with Davia, which began when they first met in a small office at Bank Street.
