UNION THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY TO OFFER NEW DOCTOR OF MINISTRY DEGREE FOCUSING ON SUPERVISORY CLINICAL SPIRITUAL CARE EDUCATION
(New York, N.Y. September 4, 2016) – Union Theological Seminary, the oldest independent seminary in the United States, located in New York City, will offer its first Doctor of Ministry program starting in January 2017 to enhance the practice of ministry among supervisory clinical spiritual care educators. Courses in theology, systems and group theory, interreligious engagement, social justice and adult education will prepare students for service in multicultural and interreligious contexts, in alignment with the requirements for certification as a supervisor in Clinical Pastoral Education.
Union President Serene Jones says: “The integration of theology, psychology, and clinical training has a long and distinguished history at Union. So we are delighted to launch a Doctor of Ministry program that builds upon this tradition while venturing in new directions. Our new program—distinctive among Doctor of Ministry programs in its emphasis—also increases Union’s online educational offerings.”
The 42-credit degree will combine intensive January residency courses with online work in the spring and fall terms, as well as a thesis or project. Students will find a collaborative learning community, faculty specialists and ample opportunity to interact with peers. Union’s strength in interreligious engagement and theological-cultural studies will help prepare students to respond to the increasing complexities and diversity of CPE groups.
Dr. Trace Haythorn, Executive Director of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE), says: “Union Theological Seminary has been the leader in public theology for many years. This new program
