Over 125 years old, The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine is the largest cathedral in the world. It is the “mother church” of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the seat of its Bishop. The church is chartered as a house of prayer for all people and as a unifying center of intellectual light and leadership.
While Cathedrals traditionally do not have their own congregations, St. John the Divine is home to the Congregation of Saint Saviour, which operates independently from the Cathedral. The congregation has approximately 400 members. Information about services and times can be found below. Furthermore, all those who would like to attend worship services and anyone seeking a place for prayer or meditation will be welcomed without charge. For sightseeing, visit the admissions page to learn more.
Like the great Medieval cathedrals and churches of the world, St. John the Divine is unfinished and will continue to be constructed over many centuries. Currently, funding is mostly directed towards maintaining the architectural integrity of the Cathedral and prioritizing serving the community through programming and social initiatives.
Some of St. John’s community initiatives include the soup kitchen (which serves roughly 25,000 meals annually), the distinguished Cathedral School (which prepares young students to be future leaders), Adults and Children in Trust (a renowned preschool, afterschool and summer program), and the outstanding Textile Conservation Lab (which preserves world treasures). The Cathedral also organizes several yearly concerts, exhibitions, performances and civic gatherings to allow for conversation, celebration, reflection and remembrance—such is the joyfully busy life of this beloved and venerated Cathedral.

Organized by El Museo del Barrio, Mestre Didi: Spiritual Form is a landmark monographic exhibition exploring the work of the late Afro-Brazilian sculptor, writer, cultural advocate and spiritual leader Mestre Didi (Salvador, Bahia, 1917-2013). As the first major U.S. museum exhibition of Didi’s work in 25 years, the survey unites over 30 of his sculptures and offers a rare view of his far-reaching spiritual and artistic legacy.
Over the course of his career, from the 1960s until the 2010s, Mestre Didi was a visionary emissary for Candomblé, an Afro-diasporic religion which developed in Brazil as formerly enslaved Africans handed down their Yoruba spiritual practices. He was perhaps the first artist to reimagine Candomblé ritual objects as artworks in their own right.

“Out of the Closets! Into the Streets!: New York City’s Pride March, 1975-1976” opens to the public on May 8. Featuring 20 photographs by internationally-recognized multi-media artist @franciscoalvaradojuarez, this exhibition provides a window into the world of New York City’s early Pride marches, known at the time as the “Christopher Street Liberation Day March.” The marches served as a vital call for increased queer visibility at a time when New York still enforced so-called “sodomy laws” that targeted the LGBTQ+ community. Alvarado Juárez’s photos of the 1975 and 1976 marches showcase the racial and ethnic diversity of the early Pride parades and reveal the nuanced bonds of kinship formed among marchers from disparate backgrounds. Continuing the Hispanic Society’s commitment to exhibiting work by artists active in the local community, “Out of the Closets! Into the Streets!” constitutes the second installment of the annual series “Arte en el Alto Manhattan” which highlights artists residing in Upper Manhattan. Stay tuned for updates on special events and programming related to this exhibition.

Since 2019, Riverside Park Conservancy has brought a herd of goats to our Bird Sanctuary, to create Goatham – a hard-to-access area in the northern part of the Park. The goats take up residency for the summer on sloped terrain that is rife with invasive plants. Since goats are naturally effective weed whackers, putting them to work in Goatham is like treating them to an all-you-can-eat buffet. It’s hearty for the goats and good for the environment.
This year, for the second season, they’ll be working in the forested area from 143rd-145th Streets, as their work in the Bird Sanctuary was completed.
Volunteers are an essential part of this program. Each evening, the goats need to be enclosed in a shelter. Our staff will let them out first thing in the morning, but we need volunteers to help us herd the goats in the evening, and more!
If you think this opportunity is right for you, please plan to attend one of our upcoming orientations by filling out this survey. The survey includes additional details about the different Goatham volunteer opportunities.
