Over 125 years old, The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine is the largest cathedral in the world. It is the “mother church” of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the seat of its Bishop. The church is chartered as a house of prayer for all people and as a unifying center of intellectual light and leadership.
While Cathedrals traditionally do not have their own congregations, St. John the Divine is home to the Congregation of Saint Saviour, which operates independently from the Cathedral. The congregation has approximately 400 members. Information about services and times can be found below. Furthermore, all those who would like to attend worship services and anyone seeking a place for prayer or meditation will be welcomed without charge. For sightseeing, visit the admissions page to learn more.
Like the great Medieval cathedrals and churches of the world, St. John the Divine is unfinished and will continue to be constructed over many centuries. Currently, funding is mostly directed towards maintaining the architectural integrity of the Cathedral and prioritizing serving the community through programming and social initiatives.
Some of St. John’s community initiatives include the soup kitchen (which serves roughly 25,000 meals annually), the distinguished Cathedral School (which prepares young students to be future leaders), Adults and Children in Trust (a renowned preschool, afterschool and summer program), and the outstanding Textile Conservation Lab (which preserves world treasures). The Cathedral also organizes several yearly concerts, exhibitions, performances and civic gatherings to allow for conversation, celebration, reflection and remembrance—such is the joyfully busy life of this beloved and venerated Cathedral.

Organized by El Museo del Barrio, Mestre Didi: Spiritual Form is a landmark monographic exhibition exploring the work of the late Afro-Brazilian sculptor, writer, cultural advocate and spiritual leader Mestre Didi (Salvador, Bahia, 1917-2013). As the first major U.S. museum exhibition of Didi’s work in 25 years, the survey unites over 30 of his sculptures and offers a rare view of his far-reaching spiritual and artistic legacy.
Over the course of his career, from the 1960s until the 2010s, Mestre Didi was a visionary emissary for Candomblé, an Afro-diasporic religion which developed in Brazil as formerly enslaved Africans handed down their Yoruba spiritual practices. He was perhaps the first artist to reimagine Candomblé ritual objects as artworks in their own right.

“Out of the Closets! Into the Streets!: New York City’s Pride March, 1975-1976” opens to the public on May 8. Featuring 20 photographs by internationally-recognized multi-media artist @franciscoalvaradojuarez, this exhibition provides a window into the world of New York City’s early Pride marches, known at the time as the “Christopher Street Liberation Day March.” The marches served as a vital call for increased queer visibility at a time when New York still enforced so-called “sodomy laws” that targeted the LGBTQ+ community. Alvarado Juárez’s photos of the 1975 and 1976 marches showcase the racial and ethnic diversity of the early Pride parades and reveal the nuanced bonds of kinship formed among marchers from disparate backgrounds. Continuing the Hispanic Society’s commitment to exhibiting work by artists active in the local community, “Out of the Closets! Into the Streets!” constitutes the second installment of the annual series “Arte en el Alto Manhattan” which highlights artists residing in Upper Manhattan. Stay tuned for updates on special events and programming related to this exhibition.

Loboko, based in New York City, is a small but mighty outfit led by Yohni Loboko (Yohni Djungu-Sungu) a virtuosic guitarist, singer and multi-instrumentalist from the Democratic Republic of Congo, based in Brooklyn. Yohni has performed with legends of Congolese music Fally Ipupa, Soukous Stars and Zaiko Langa Langa. In 2019 he founded Loboko alongside drummer, DJ and journalist Morgan Greenstreet and supported by multi-instrumentalist and producer Nikhil Yerawadekar, with frequent special guest Ngouma Lokito, veteran bassist and studio musician on hundreds of Congolese records and long-time member of Soukous Stars. Loboko’s unique style draws on classic Congolese soukous, rumba, and contemporary seben delivered in a punchy small band format. In 2023, Loboko released a vinyl ’45: Kanyunyi / Ekenge with the acclaimed Brooklyn label “Names You Can Trust”.

Creating Compelling Research Narrative Workshop
Online
July 7, 2025 | Livestream, virtual training
This five-hour hands-on writing bootcamp covers several approaches to create compelling research narrative and is led by expert instructors with more than two decades of experience providing research writing, editing, and training for researchers worldwide. This intensive will lead you through detailed examples, revise writing in guided group settings with instructors, and then put those lessons into practice on your own writing. Thus, we encourage you to bring a draft in progress (e.g., grant proposal, research manuscript), so this workshop can directly impact an active writing project. Participants also will come away with an SOP for writing logically and will learn some additional narrative tricks and tips to entice and engage readers on their science.
By the end of this writing intensive workshop, participants will have:
- A clear and organized approach for writing manuscripts and grants
- Several easy grammar concepts for clear communication
- Examples to share/work with their trainees
- An improved portion of your own grant or manuscript (if you bring it with you to the workshop)
Investigators at all career stages are welcome to attend, and we particularly encourage research trainees and early-stage investigators to participate. To register for this training, you must have:
- Written at least one thesis chapter, manuscript, or grant
- A grant or manuscript that is in progress is strongly encouraged, but not required to attend this training.
Additional Information
- Subscribe for updates on Workshop details and registration deadlines.
- Contact the Creating Compelling Scientific Narrative Workshop team.
Capacity is limited. Paid registration required to attend.

Quantitative Genomics Training

July 7-8, 2025 | Livestream, virtual training
The Quantitative Genomics Training is a two-day intensive training of seminars and hands-on analytical sessions to provide an overview of concepts, methods, and tools for whole-genome and transcriptome analyses in human health studies.
This two-day intensive workshop will provide a rigorous introduction to several different techniques to analyze whole-genome sequencing and transcriptome data. Led by a team of experts in statistical genomics and bioinformatics, who have developed their own methods to analyze such data, the training will integrate seminar lectures with hands-on computer lab sessions to put concepts into practice. The training will focus on reviewing existing approaches based on predicted expression association with traits, colocalization of causal variants, and Mendelian Randomization, including discussion on how they relate to each other, and their advantages and limitations. Emphasis will also be given to reviewing integrative sequence-based association studies for whole-genome sequencing data, and functional annotation of variants in noncoding regions of the genome.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be familiar with the following topics:
- Sequence-based association tests (Burden, SKAT and extensions)
- Functional genomic annotations
- Analysis of genomic variants in human diseases
- Transcriptome wide association tests (PrediXcan, MetaXcan, and extensions)
- Mendelian Randomization techniques
- Colocalization techniques
Audience and Requirements
Investigators at all career stages are welcome to attend, and we particularly encourage trainees and early-stage investigators to participate. There are three requirements to attend this workshop:
- Each participant must have an introductory background in statistics and genetics, and/or in the statistical analysis of genetic data.
- Experience using R is recommended to get the most out of lab sessions.
- Each participant should have a laptop with R/RStudio downloaded and installed prior to the first day of training. All lab sessions will be done using Posit Cloud (formerly RStudio Cloud).
Additional Information
- Subscribe for updates on new Training details and registration deadlines.
- Contact the Quantitative Genomics Training team.
Capacity is limited. Paid registration is required to attend.
