Over 125 years old, The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine is the largest cathedral in the world. It is the “mother church” of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the seat of its Bishop. The church is chartered as a house of prayer for all people and as a unifying center of intellectual light and leadership.
While Cathedrals traditionally do not have their own congregations, St. John the Divine is home to the Congregation of Saint Saviour, which operates independently from the Cathedral. The congregation has approximately 400 members. Information about services and times can be found below. Furthermore, all those who would like to attend worship services and anyone seeking a place for prayer or meditation will be welcomed without charge. For sightseeing, visit the admissions page to learn more.
Like the great Medieval cathedrals and churches of the world, St. John the Divine is unfinished and will continue to be constructed over many centuries. Currently, funding is mostly directed towards maintaining the architectural integrity of the Cathedral and prioritizing serving the community through programming and social initiatives.
Some of St. John’s community initiatives include the soup kitchen (which serves roughly 25,000 meals annually), the distinguished Cathedral School (which prepares young students to be future leaders), Adults and Children in Trust (a renowned preschool, afterschool and summer program), and the outstanding Textile Conservation Lab (which preserves world treasures). The Cathedral also organizes several yearly concerts, exhibitions, performances and civic gatherings to allow for conversation, celebration, reflection and remembrance—such is the joyfully busy life of this beloved and venerated Cathedral.

Situated at the intersection of art and psychiatry, the exhibition Francesc Tosquelles: Avant-Garde Psychiatry and the Birth of Art Brut explores for the first time in the United States the legacy of Catalan psychiatrist Francesc Tosquelles. After fleeing the Nationalist government of Franco amidst the Spanish Civil War, Tosquelles arrived in 1940 at the Saint-Alban psychiatric hospital in Southern France, where he devised a series of revolutionary psychiatric practices.
Developed in conjunction with this four-venue international exhibition, the symposium “Institutional Psychotherapy: The Legacy and Constellations of Francesc Tosquelles” will draw from the themes and contributions featured in the multi-author English accompanying publication (edited by AFAM’s exhibition co-curators Carles Guerra, Joana Masó, Valérie Rousseau and Edward Dioguardi), as well as by Joana Masó’s English anthology on Tosquelles.
Conceived as an interdisciplinary dialogue, this online symposium will chart the history of the Saint-Alban “asylum-village” while studying past and present significance of “institutional psychotherapy”. Akin to Tosquelles’ methodologies and epistemologies, the symposium will not offer a doctrinal survey about pioneering psychiatry and occupational therapy. Instead, the presentations will guide us through experiences, artworks, and archival materials to reexamine mental health history and reconsider it in a larger political, social, and cultural context.
Aside from the exhibition co-curators, Joana Masó, Carles Guerra, Valérie Rousseau, and Edward Dioguardi, this symposium will gather speakers from Europe and the United States–scholars and professionals from the fields of French studies, law & social sciences, psychiatry and medical history, Western art, and media studies.
The first day of the symposium will examine the ways in which Tosquelles’s psychiatric, political, and cultural initiatives contribute to the reflection on mental health care and the search for disability justice. The second part will put in perspective the artistic and intellectual life at the Saint-Alban Psychiatric Hospital and the legacy of Tosquelles’s institutional psychotherapy in the arts and humanities. Closing remarks by W.J.T. Mitchell and Hannah Zeavin will address mental illness from a critical perspective.

Co-organized by the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB) and Les Abattoirs, Musée– Frac Occitanie Toulouse, this four-venue collaboration was previously presented at the Abattoirs, CCCB, and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid. It developed from a research project entitled “El llegat oblidat de Francesc Tosquelles” (The forgotten legacy of Francesc Tosquelles), co-produced by the Mir-Puig Private Foundation (Barcelona), the University of Barcelona, and Fundació Antoni Tàpies (Barcelona).

New Plays Festival: Leo’s Requiem
by Darius M. Buckley
Showtimes
Friday, May 3 @ 3:30 pm
Friday, May 3 @ 8 pm
Saturday, May 4 @ 3:30 pm
Leo’s Requiem follows the story of a young black composer/ conductor in residence at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra who’s searching for words to set for his next commission. When he rediscovers a notebook of his late childhood friend’s poetry, he unearths a rainstorm of pain, memories and inspiration. This play with music, structured as a requiem mass itself, explores grief in young men of color, and the divine power of music that heals those wounds.
About the Playwright
Darius M. Buckley is a dramatist, published author, performing artist, and native Detroiter. He studied Broadcast and Cinematic Arts at Central Michigan University and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Playwriting at Columbia University. A few of his playwriting and musical theatre writing credits include: The Fly & Incredibly Dope Adventures of Tyrone Jenkins: A Detroit Hip Hop Musical (CMU and the Detroit Fringe Festival), Thin Places (115 Short Play Festival), and The Bridge (Columbia University). His play in verse, 18, won the 48th Samuel French Off Off-Broadway Short Play Festival and will be published and licensed by Concord Theatricals. Darius has also written and directed films such as: “The DEFY Film”, “5: A Visual Poem”, “American Thriller”, “Wonder Boy and Making Tyrone: A 1VK1 Mini Documentary”. His literary publications include Wonder Boy: A Science Fiction Short, Only The Golden Sky Knows, and his first novella, HAZE: Book One. His calling is to write soulful black stories that inform, inspire, and heal. Stories that embody the pain, joy, and magic of young black voices.
About the New Plays Festival
Columbia University School of the Arts presents an expanded festival of new plays written by Columbia MFA Playwriting Students. The esteemed faculty who have nurtured these students, including Tony©, Pulitzer, and Obie Award winners such as James Ijames, Rebecca Taichman, Sarah DeLappe, Steve Martin, Will Eno, Karey Kirkpatrick and David Henry Hwang invite you to experience these innovative new playwrights.
