Over 125 years old, The Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine is the largest cathedral in the world. It is the “mother church” of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and the seat of its Bishop. The church is chartered as a house of prayer for all people and as a unifying center of intellectual light and leadership.
While Cathedrals traditionally do not have their own congregations, St. John the Divine is home to the Congregation of Saint Saviour, which operates independently from the Cathedral. The congregation has approximately 400 members. Information about services and times can be found below. Furthermore, all those who would like to attend worship services and anyone seeking a place for prayer or meditation will be welcomed without charge. For sightseeing, visit the admissions page to learn more.
Like the great Medieval cathedrals and churches of the world, St. John the Divine is unfinished and will continue to be constructed over many centuries. Currently, funding is mostly directed towards maintaining the architectural integrity of the Cathedral and prioritizing serving the community through programming and social initiatives.
Some of St. John’s community initiatives include the soup kitchen (which serves roughly 25,000 meals annually), the distinguished Cathedral School (which prepares young students to be future leaders), Adults and Children in Trust (a renowned preschool, afterschool and summer program), and the outstanding Textile Conservation Lab (which preserves world treasures). The Cathedral also organizes several yearly concerts, exhibitions, performances and civic gatherings to allow for conversation, celebration, reflection and remembrance—such is the joyfully busy life of this beloved and venerated Cathedral.

The Impact of Canada’s Election on the Global Energy Transition
Online
Organizer

The relationship between the US and Canada, each of which is the other’s principal source of imported energy, has become increasingly fraught in recent months. Canada and the US have imposed tariffs on cars, metals, and other exports and imports on each other. At the end of April, Canadian voters elected Mark Carney Prime Minister and the Liberal Party into power, the result of a campaign built largely around opposition to Trump administration policies driving these actions. Carney has spoken publicly about reducing Canada’s reliance on US energy by building relationships with Europe, and, possibly, China.
Please join the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University SIPA for a rapid response briefing with Robert Johnston, CGEP senior director of research; Jon Elkind, CGEP senior research scholar; Sarah Bianchi, CGEP distinguished visiting fellow; and Chris Bataille, CGEP global fellow. They will discuss the implications of the Canadian election for the US-Canada energy relationship, the global energy transition, and how the Carney administration’s priorities may influence the increasingly fragmented geopolitical landscape emerging around the world.
This public event will be hosted via Zoom. Upon registration, a confirmation email will be sent to you with the Zoom access link for the briefing.
For more information about the briefing, please contact energypolicyevents@columbia.edu.

Abstract: The United States developed relationships with its research universities during World War II which produced the Manhattan Project (U. of California) and the Rad Lab (MIT), among others. In the years after the war, these relationships were enhanced and enlarged through the creation of the Atomic Energy Commission, the Office of Naval Research, the National Institutes of Health, and the National Science Foundation. These government-university relationships have been enormously fruitful for a variety of reasons. In this grand rounds, we will explore the unusual nature of these relationships and discuss the future of science funding in the United States.

House of Time: Italian Women

Although the accepted roles for women in the Baroque era were predictably limited and largely excluded the arts, recent scholarship has put a new focus on women composers who broke through these social limitations to create music that was beautiful, refined, and deserves a place in the repertoire. House of Time explores the work of these pioneers from the early to the high Baroque in pieces by Francesca Caccini, Isabella Leonarda, Anna Bon, and Antonia Bembo.
ARTISTS
House of Time, known for their “fluency and command” (San Francisco Classical Voice) and “fine playing, cohesiveness and creativity” (Early Music America), is dedicated to both well-known and underperformed repertoire of the 17th through the 21st century played on period instruments. Members and guests include faculty and alumni of The Juilliard School, as well as prize-winners of major international competitions.
Going into their 11th season, House of Time is ensemble in residence at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in New York City.
