Added as an extension to Riverside Park in 1896 with a large renovation in 1932
Designed by Olmstead Brothers (1932 renovation)
Description: The name “Sakura” is Japanese for cherry tree, and the park was named Sakura Park after the Committee of Japanese Residents of New York gifted New York 2,000 trees from Japan in 1909. The land was purchased in 1869 as an eastern extension of Riverside Park, and in 1932 the park was redesigned by the Olmsted Brothers which led to a 2-year renovation. Another renovation occurred in 1981 which was designed by Quennell Rothschild Associates. The park is viewed as an area of tranquility in the city.
