Babel: Movements of Contradiction

Babel: Movements of Contradiction, a groundbreaking dance-theatrical piece created, choreographed and directed by Elliott Ortiz; who inspired by the ancient myth of Babel and its reflection on the divisive nature of language. Babel: Movements of Contradiction draws striking parallels between the ancient ambition to reach the heavens and the modern-day skyline of New York City, where towering skyscrapers symbolize the elite’s pursuit of power and dominance. However, Elliott’s piece transcends the Babel story itself, exploring the complexities of contemporary society through dynamic and visually compelling scenes. The narrative centers on Peter, a depressed professor, and his AI creation, Hermes. As Peter grapples with his inner turmoil, the audience is taken on a journey through his mind, where fantasies and ghosts come to life. The choreography, enriched by the fusion of various dance styles—including flamenco, tango, and modern dance—invites the audience to reflect on the diverse, often contradictory, nature of modern society. Audience members can expect a captivating sensory experience, where the stage becomes a metaphorical reflection of our world. The versatile set features three towering structures, with the central tower connected to a “bridge” with stairs and flanked by two large screens. Strategic headlines across the space symbolize the influence of media, while layered audio—combining news, social media notifications, and music—enhances the immersive atmosphere.

With a combination of emotions in motion his choreography and staging evoke a poetic dimension of Hispanic dramatism; showing a harsh world in harsh aesthetic with a sense of reconciliation. Sometimes forcing the audience to question life and their placement in it, not by providing an alternative solution, but providing a ground for exploration with multiple stories on dancers’ bodies. This dance-theatrical performance is supported by LMCC, UMEZ, Dance 10 Project and El Barrio’s Artspace.
