Featuring: Judy Bowman – Artist with Swag
Judy Bowman’s vibrant mixed-media collages celebrate Black culture, community, and history. Her work, currently on view in We Loved the Swag: From Black Bottom Until Now at the Flint Institute of Arts, reflects her deep-rooted memories of growing up in Detroit’s Eastside and Black Bottom neighborhoods.
Bowman’s artistry embodies joy, resilience, and cultural pride—capturing the energy of church Sundays, jazzy nights, and the unmistakable “swag” of Black life. She considers herself a visual griot, preserving stories that resonate across generations.
Hear Judy in conversation as she reflects on her work, influences, and what it means to create art that archives Black life and history.
