Magnify Your Visual Voice: Calligraphy & Contemplation for Justice
Your voice, a gift from the Creator, needs to be heard! Whether it is speaking loudly for justice or conveying your love of beauty or a beloved, you are invited to spend a day steeped in calligraphy techniques and contemplative moments as a means of doing justice—visually.
We will practice techniques in Italic calligraphy and other forms and you will have the option to create a small book (or zine) to take home.
Please bring:
• Pilot Parallel Pen – size 3.8 mm, (green cap) for class—around $10 at Blick Art or online.
• Snacks or lunch & water or beverage
• Optional: quotes or verses related to justice
About the instructor/facilitator:
Laura Sasaki Norton (she/her), seminary intern at Riverside, has been practicing and teaching calligraphy at retreat centers and conferences in the U.S. and Mexico for more than 30 years—including studying with Donald Jackson, Calligrapher and Art Director for the St. John’s Bible—and creating calligraphic art on murals, windows, paper, and silk. Inspired by Micah 6:8 and other justice-focused texts and poetry, Laura creates art as a means of amplifying much-needed calls for justice as a generative response to Divine love.
