Breathe Free: Environmental Justice from New Orleans to Harlem

What is the role of science in community-based environmental justice initiatives?

Community and climate justice leaders from New Orleans founded and are leading the Lincoln Beach Restoration Project. This beach was historically a vibrant and heavily visited Black beach, but fell in disrepair and neglect by the city after desegregation. The beach was “rediscovered” in the search for outdoor spaces and access to nature during COVID-19, and these community leaders have been organizing tirelessly for it to be cleaned up and made accessible to their community. The speakers will share their methods and successes, the hurdles each of their communities face in accessing non -toxic spaces to gather, and they will be asked to reflect on the role science should play in such contexts.

Event Speakers

  • Cameron Clarke, NY HEAT Campaign Coordinator at WE ACT for Environmental Justice
  • Reggie Ford, artist and activist
  • Sage Michael, Climate Justice Organizer at Healthy Gulf
  • Tricia Wallace, musician and founder of New Orleans for Lincoln Beach
  • Moderated by Hadeel Assali, Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the Center for Science and Society
