Controlling the Narrative: Lifescapes and Watercolors with Philip Smallwood
The Cinque Artist Talk series features an online conversation with painter Phillip Smallwood.
A master of the watercolor technique, Smallwood uses his art to capture the nuanced moments and finer details, choosing subjects that resonate with depth and authenticity. For more than 25 years Smallwood has been blending imagination, reality, and social consciousness to transform ordinary scenes into enduring narratives that embrace real people living real, honest, imperfect, and totally unrehearsed lives. Often referred to as the black Norman Rockwell, Smallwood acknowledges the strong influences in his work, paying homage to his late brother, Fredrick Smallwood Jr. and renowned artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Thomas Eakins, and John Singer Sargent.
His Lifescapes offer more than just a glimpse into American life; they invite the viewer to engage with stories untold, perspectives unseen, and voices unheard.
The artist will discuss a national tour of his portrait of Civil Rights Icon, Theodora Smiley Lacey.
