Bio: Dr. Fishbach is a distinguished professor at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, specializing in social psychology, management, and consumer behavior. Her groundbreaking research on human motivation has earned her numerous prestigious awards and led to her authoring the book “GET IT DONE: Surprising Lessons from the Science of Motivation.” Fishbach’s work focuses on how people can achieve their aspirations, covering topics such as self-control, intrinsic motivation, and promoting healthy lifestyles.
Abstract: We live in a society that celebrates failure as a teachable moment. Yet, failure would undermine learning if people ignore it — if in response to failure, people stop paying attention. I present the evidence that people indeed fail to learn from failure and further do not share information on failure with others, even when knowing how to avoid failure is critical for success. I then explore the conditions under which the information in failure is superior and the interventions we developed to increase learning from negative outcomes.
