Jessie Cox – Sounds of Black Switzerland

At this event, Jessie Cox will discuss his work at the intersection of Black studies, music/sound studies, and critical theory. Drawing from his forthcoming monograph Sounds of Black Switzerland: Blackness, Music, and Unthought Voices, Cox will explore how experimental musical practices and Black thought can open new discursive spaces—such as thematizing Black Swiss life—while challenging dominant narratives around race, migration, and belonging. Engaging both his scholarly and creative practices, Cox will reflect on how his experiences as a composer, drummer, and collaborator with ensembles like the Sun Ra Arkestra, Klangforum Wien, and the LA Phil shape his approach to sound, identity, and the cosmos.
