OBIE AWARD WINNING THEATRE COMPANY Celebrates Caribbean Culture with: THE BRAATA SINGERS 16th Anniversary Concert: UNPLUGGED

Following their Off-Broadway Debut, Obie Award-winning Braata Productions celebrates 16 years of THE BRAATA SINGERS with UNPLUGGED– an intimate musical experience honoring Caribbean music, culture, and folklore.

UNPLUGGED invites audiences into a deeper connection with THE BRAATA SINGERS, the premier Caribbean Choral ensemble in the United States, known for their highly theatrical concert presentations and authentic folk performances. In their most personal performance to date, UNPLUGGED offers a raw, heartfelt, and soulful journey through the rhythms and stories of the Caribbean. THE BRAATA SINGERS will revisit fan favorites from their extensive repertoire, alongside a handpicked selection of songs that speak to each performer’s personal story.

Performances run June 27-29, at Theatre Row, located at 410 West 42nd Street in Manhattan. Showtimes: June 27 at 7pm June 28 at 3pm and 8pm June 29 at 7pm

Tickets are $60, available at https://bfany.org/theatre-row/shows/braata-singers-in-concert-unplugged/ THE BRAATA SINGERS: UNPLUGGED also pays tribute to Suriname’s 50th anniversary of independence, recognizing its rich musical traditions and vibrant place in the region. Additionally, UNPLUGGED shines a light on lesser-known Caribbean connections, highlighting the music of places like Belize and other hidden gems of the diaspora. The program will include a special arrangement of the song “Faluma!” to celebrate Suriname’s 50th year of Independence, Rise Up by Andra Day, the Jamaican Folk song Coconut Woman by Harry Belafonte, Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston, and an early Dancehall Medley with songs like Not an Easy Road by Buju Banton and Tony Rebel’s If Jah Is Standing By My Side.

THE BRAATA SINGERS is under the direction of Andrew Clarke (the AUDELCO Award winning Best Musical Flambeaux) with a production team that includes co-artistic director Karl O’Brian Williams (Jamaican Actor Boy Award winning Best Plays The Black That I Am and Not About Eve), and musical director Joel Edwards.

About Braata Productions: Braata Productions is an OBIE Award-winning, New York-based nonprofit organization committed to giving Caribbean and Caribbean-American artistes a platform through which to showcase their work and talents. Founded in May 2009 by actor and singer Andrew Clarke, Braata– named for the Jamaican colloquial term meaning “more”– strives to give audiences an unforgettable, “extra” experience with each production.

In its brief history, Braata Productions’ projects and programs have served over 350 artists, directors, designers, technicians and young entrepreneurial artists and has enjoyed many successes including the creation of The Braata Singers, Braata Education & Outreach titled Project BE, Braata Theatre Workshop and The “Braata” Award. Most notably, The Braata Singers have solidified their role as the leading authority in Caribbean Folk performance outside of the Caribbean region. Braata aims to authentically represent the culture of the Caribbean islands and to prioritize cultivating and re-telling Caribbean stories and legends for generations to come.

Braata maintains strong ties to the community and has a reputation for artistic excellence, educational innovation, and fiscal responsibility. Allowing immigrants’ voices a chance for creative expression, our principal activities include theatre, music, and folk arts, in addition to education and community outreach. These activities take us on engagements outside of the 5 boroughs of NYC to Connecticut, Rochester, and Boston to name a few. Braata’s goal is to rekindle an appreciation for Caribbean culture & heritage amongst Caribbeans and non-Caribbeans alike by engaging community members in New York and surrounding areas.
