Seneca Village was a community established by African American landowners in 1825 and destroyed by the City of New York in 1857 for the construction of Central Park. Research beginning in the 1990s has shed light on the once-forgotten village: a stable, successful, rural home to dozens of families. Much is still unknown, however, and no images or above-ground traces remain, making imagining the village challenging. This talk presents Envisioning Seneca Village, an interactive 3D model of what the village might have looked like in 1855. The project’s coauthors will discuss how they combined ongoing research in archaeology, history, historical geographic information systems (GIS), and architectural rendering to build the model; their plans for future improvements; and their aims for the project to both catalyze new research and keep the memory of Seneca Village alive in the present.

Seneca Village fue una comunidad establecida por terratenientes afroamericanos en 1825 y destruida por la ciudad de Nueva York en 1857 para la construcción de Central Park. Las investigaciones iniciadas en la década de 1990 han sacado a la luz la aldea una vez olvidada: un hogar rural estable, exitoso y hogar de docenas de familias. Sin embargo, aún se desconoce mucho y no quedan imágenes ni rastros superficiales, lo que dificulta imaginar la aldea. Esta charla presenta “Envisioning Seneca Village” (Imaginando Seneca Village), un modelo 3D interactivo de cómo podría haber sido la aldea en 1855. Los coautores del proyecto discutirán cómo combinaron la investigación en curso en arqueología, historia, sistemas de información geográfica histórica (SIG) y representación arquitectónica para construir el modelo; sus planes para futuras mejoras; y sus objetivos para que el proyecto impulse nuevas investigaciones y mantenga viva la memoria de Seneca Village en el presente.
