Technology for Treatment of SUDs: Harnessing the Smartphone

Most people in the general population carry a smartphone and interact with it regularly. Behavioral and medication treatments for substance use disorders are effective, but adherence is a problem; some patients adhere to treatment, but many drop out of treatment, or choose not to engage in the first place.  Can the smartphone be harnessed to engage more people with substance use disorders in effective treatment Through, for example, therapeutic apps delivering behavioral therapy or promoting medication adherence? Or, harnessing the data about activity and communication smartphones passively collect? In this CHOSEN Seminar, we will be joined by Dr. Lisa Marsch, Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health at Dartmouth College, who has spearheaded many innovations in this field.  Drs. Edward Nunes and Aimee Campbell, who have run studies testing therapeutic apps, will engage Dr. Marsch in a discussion providing an overview of the landscape of technology and substance/mental health treatment, and engage the audience to brainstorm on potential future directions and projects.
