Wallach Talks: Poetry Reading

“…Find an order or a beauty free of terror. Any light is time.”
—Rosemary Mayer

Rosemary Mayer is not only an artist, but also a writer, critic, and Classics scholar. At once cryptic and witty, the writing Mayer incorporates into her drawings, collages, sculptures, and performances opens up a poetic space that transcends the referentiality of words.

This poetry reading activates the exhibition Rosemary Mayer: Words in Art are Signs Returned by bringing the work in dialogue with a constellation of feminist voices, from Mayer’s contemporaries Bernadette Mayer and Hannah Weiner, to imagined acquaintances such as Louise Glück and Mei-mei Bressenbruger. It will explore the theme of interconnections—across times and places, between the mystical and the quotidian, the earthly and the monumental—and reflect on their implications for our experiences today and the furthering of the feminist project.
